I. Introduction to Online RUC

In 1998, RUC established the first online education college in China that provides online education programs via the Internet - “Online RUC”. Since then, “Online RUC” has set up service centers in more than 50 cities all over China and enrolled more than 40,000 students in its junior college and undergraduate programs. In Year 2004, in order to reinforce the integration of Online RUC and continuing education resources and develop itself into a world class online university, RUC merged its Online Education College and the Adult Higher Education College into RUC Continuing Education College. Thanks to the unremitting efforts of more than 7 years, RUC has become one of the domestic leading universities with its strong capability and excellent quality of online education management and Online RUC has become one of Chinese most influential online education colleges.

 

II. Subjects Available in the Degree Programs

Finance, Accounting, International Trade, Business Administration, Marketing, Finance & Taxation,law, Public Affairs Administration (only available for junior college graduates applying for the undergraduate program or university graduates applying for a second university degree), Chinese Language & Literature.

  III. Junior College or Undergraduate Program for Senior High School Graduates and Undergraduate Program for Junior College Graduates

1. Targets and Admission Criteria: Senior high school graduates applying for the junior college and undergraduate programs must hold the graduation certificate of an ordinary senior high school, a trade school or a vocational school. Junior college graduates applying for the undergraduate programs must hold the graduation certificate of a junior college or above under the category of popular education. The registered permanent residence files shall remain unmoved upon admission and no job assignment shall be guaranteed upon graduation.

2. Admission Examinations : Applicants who hold a graduation certificate of junior college or above under the category of popular education and applied for the junior college or undergraduate programs for senior high school graduates shall be exempted from examinations and those who hold a university graduation certificate or above under the category of popular education and applied for undergraduate programs for junior college graduates also shall be exempted from examinations. Applicants who are not eligible for exemption must attend the entrance examinations (with one comprehensive examination paper) organized by the College. The entrance examination for junior college and undergraduate programs for senior high school graduates shall cover the courses of English Language, Mathematics, Chinese Language and Fundamentals of Computer and Network Applications; the entrance examination for undergraduate programs of Public Affairs Administration, Chinese Language & Literature andlaw for junior college graduates shall cover the courses of English Language, College Chinese and Fundamentals of Computer and Network Applications while the entrance examinations for the other specialties shall cover the courses of English Language, Higher Mathematics and Fundamentals of Computer and Network Application. The examination contents can be referred to the Examination Outlines of the National Higher Education Examination for Self-taught Adults and the specimen examination papers can be downloaded from “Online RUC” Website.

3. Length of Schooling, Learning Period and Credit : The length of schooling for junior college education program which is available for senior high school graduates and undergraduate program which is available for junior college graduates is three-year, the learning period is between two to five years, the learners are supposed to obtain 80 credit units (100 credit units are required for the undergraduate programs specialized inlaw available for junior college graduates with a different specialty). Learners of a five-year undergraduate education program for senior high school graduates are supposed to obtain 160 credit units within a learning period of 4 to 7 years.

4. Exemption of Examinations:Matriculates who have passed the examinations in the subjects under the category of popular education are eligible for exemptions of examinations for correlative courses within the scope of public fundamental courses and public selective courses, while the subjects which need nation-wide unified examinations are exceptions. The total credits involved in such exemptions shall not exceed 20% of the total credits specified in the instructional planning.

5. Course Examination : All the examinations for the courses included in the junior college programs shall be organized by the College while three public courses for undergraduate programs for senior high school graduates and three public courses for undergraduate programs for junior college graduates shall be subject to nationwide examinations. The examinations for all the other courses shall be organized by the College.

6. Diplomas and Degrees : RUC Diploma (for Online Education) is recognized by China government. Eligible graduates of the undergraduate programs shall be awarded with a bachelor's degree.

 

IV. Second University Degree Program

The Second University Degree Program is designed on an open basis for applicants who have had a first university degree (or above) under the category of popular education and apply for continuing education. The subject configuration, mode of learning, tuition, student status, certificates and other requirements of this Program are same as those for the undergraduate program for junior college graduates. The course examinations shall be prepared and organized by the College and the students need not to attend any nationwide unified examinations.

 

V. Single Elective Course & Continuing Professional Education Online Program

This online program is designed on an open basis for in-service learners who intend to update and expand their professional knowledge. The “single elective courses” refer to all the courses available in the Online RUC Program with a maximum learning period of 2 years per course. The “continuing professional education” means the learners will take a group of courses comprising of a number of key professional courses included in the undergraduate program for junior college graduates with a maximum learning period of 2 years and the same requirements included in the degree education programs on credit units and tuition shall apply. Examinations for this program shall be prepared and organized by the College and students who successfully pass these examinations shall be granted with a single course certificate or a continuing professional education completion certificate. Students who are eligible for the degree programs and have passed the entrance examination may be officially offered a place. Learners who have obtained the student status of a degree program are allowed to transfer the course scores and credit units earned in the previous 5 years into the degree programs.

 

VI. Teaching Methods and Features

The Online RUC Program is mainly operated via Internet and in a decentralized way. Students may study the courses on a part-time basis via Internet at home or in office at any time to their convenience. The main teaching processes and methods include: * Online Learning Guidance : Learning guidance materials are published by the teachers on the Online Classroom BBS, including course introduction, staged guidance, daily guidance and pre-examination guidance and so on. * Self-Study : including self-study of paper-printed teaching materials and multimedia courses. The multimedia courses generally include the online version and the CD version, which are respectively used for online or offline course studies and mainly include course outline, lectures, cases, background information, example analysis, comprehensive exercises and other study contents as well as bookmarks, mini dictionaries, notebooks and other learning tools. * Online Question & Answer : Online Question-Answer is conducted by means of FAQs, Tutor Mailbox, BBS and Agent Question-Answer. * Online Discussion : The teacher-to-student and classmate-to-classmate online discussions are conducted via the Online Classroom BBS. * Course Assignment : The course assignments are managed in the form of examination databases and distributed stage by stage. Students are required to choose the course tasks randomly and submit them online. * Specimen Examination Papers : Students may get a basic idea of the examination style and requirements from the specimen examination papers, which are similar to the actual examinations in terms of the types, quantity and difficulty of the examination questions. * Comprehensive Exercises : The comprehensive exercises are prepared chapter by chapter and managed in the form of examination databases. The students may use such exercises during the learning and review process so as to consolidate their knowledge and verify their learning effect. * Course Examinations: Different styles of examinations are adopted for different courses, which mainly include closed book examinations, open book examinations, thesis submitted online and so on. The closed book examinations and the open book examinations are organized in a centralized way at the local Teaching and Learning Service Centers. * Academic Lectures : Itinerating teaching activities or online real-time academic lectures are organized on a regular basis if necessary. * Graduation Thesis: Students of the undergraduate programs are required to write a graduation thesis upon the completion of the courses and they may communicate with the tutors via the Internet to complete and submit the thesis.

 

VII. Modes and Features of Teaching Management

In terms of teaching management, the Online RUC adopts management of credit which is centered on the elective system, the system of flexible length of study and the system of appointment-required examination. The students are allowed to select the courses , arrange their study time flexibly in association with the instructional planning and examination plans based on their own situations. Four course examinations are organized each year on an appointment-required basis. The students may choose to attend any one of such examinations at their own discretion. Each course have three examination chances to the maximum. Students who successfully earn the required credit units within the specified learning period are allowed to graduate (while those students ineligible for exemptions specified for undergraduate degree programs must go through the nationwide unifiedexaminations for some public fundamental courses).

 

VIII. Recruiting Areas, Application Procedure, Admission and Beginning Time

Online RUC Program is available for applicants who are in the same cities or surrounding areas where RUC Teaching and Learning Service Centers are located. Applications are accepted from this day on. Date of Entrance Examination: July 24 th (14:00 to 16:30 for Beijing and Shenzhen; 13:00 to 15:30 for Nanjing and 9:00 to 11:30 for the other areas) and 9:00 to 11:30 on Oct. 23 rd . Beginning Time: September 2005.

* Applicants should present the original and 2 photocopies (in B5 size) of the ID Card, the original and 2 photocopies (in B5 size) of the graduation certificates and four 1-inch color certificate photos of the same negative and pay an application fee of RMB 50 and an entrance examination fee of RMB 50 (which shall be exempted for applicants with examination-free admission).

* Applicants may fill out the Application From online via the “Online RUC” homepage or get a printed Application Form at the Teaching and Learning Service Centers. Students must log onto the “Online RUC” homepage and fulfill the new student registration process and make an appointment for the entrance examination following the instructions and requirements shown in the column of “Entrance Guidance”.

* The College shall issue a “Notice of Admission” to applicants who have passed the entrance examination and those who are accepted and exempted from examinations. The name list of enrolled students will be published on the “Online RUC” Website and at the local service centers.

* Applicants coming from areas surrounding the cities where the Teaching and Learning Service Centers are located may complete their applications directly at the local Teaching and Learning Service Center or firstly fill out an Application Form online and then sign the Application Form and pay the application and examination fees at the Teaching and Learning Service Center upon the entrance examination. During the learning process, all the other learning activities may be conducted locally via the Internet, except for the centralized teaching activities such as course examinations that must be attended at the service centers.

Important Notes:

* Students are required to have strong self-study ability and the basic conditions and skills of computers and network application and sufficient knowledge about online education. All potential learners are warmly welcomed by Online RUC. All applicants should get a full picture of the nature, style and features of the Online RUC Program by carefully going through the "Admission Brochure" or through necessary enquiries so as to complete the learning career smoothly and fruitfully.

* The College shall not bear any responsibilities for whether the graduation certificates submitted by the applicants together with the application form belong to the category of popular education. Any applicants who are found holding a fake certificate or any unacceptable certificates shall be responsible for all results arising thereof and the fees paid in such cases shall not be refunded.
